Managing Cyber Vulnerabilities in the Financial Industry
Alain Beuchat, Chief Information Security Officer, Banque Lombard Odier
Beat Schaer, Head IT Security and Architecture, Swiss National Bank
The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2020 places information infrastructure breakdown and large-scale cyberattacks among the topmost impactful risks. Following the sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, a rise in cyberattacks on crucial infrastructure is expected.
Financial market infrastructures across the globe are not immune to these risks, and there is massive potential for the disruption of critical financial services, the cumulative risks being difficult to predict. Cyberattacks are constantly evolving, increasing in severity, and spreading, highly sophisticated, targeted attacks being accompanied by a growing number of opportunistic strikes, as witnessed in recent years.
Financial institutions thus need to invest in cyber defense to address these threats. Such defenses take on an even greater importance given the waves of cyberattacks experienced during the pandemic in Switzerland and abroad. The recent ejection of certain financial institutions from the SWIFT international payments system has further stoked concerns that cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are being used to circumvent Western sanctions imposed by on Russia.
